Hotel Environment Charter

The Accor Hotels Environment Charter is a federal environment management tool for every Accor hotel and has a vocation to encourage and accompany the commitment of each hotel in its environmental process.

In 2006, the Charter was extensively revised in order to reinforce its role within the hotel teams, to whom enthusiasm is essential for the collective success.

Why did the Charter been evolve ?

The first Environment Charter has been a federal tool for the group and allowed the hotels to be committed in concrete terms in the environmental approaches. Its success has been testified by the increasing average number of actions implemented by the hotels as well as the extending scope of application of the Charter in four continents out of five.

In 2006, 7 years later, it is now necessary to enrich the environmental actions that it involves. Thus, the number of the environmental actions was increased from 15 to 65 plus a transversal action which is the ISO 14001 certification. The objectives of this evolution are:
- to continue enhancing our environmental performance;
- to reinforce the internal processes;
- to extend the environmental actions already implemented by some hotels;
- to take in account the local specificities;
- to emphasize the ISO 14001 certification.

The evolution procedure

The evolution of the Environmental Charter is a team work between the Sustainable development department and the group’s environment coordinators who conduct the hotels’ environment process in different countries. Questionnaire feedback allowed to know better about the tested actions as well as the fixed objectives in the different regions.

Accor partners, in particular the certified suppliers, were also consulted about the most relevant actions to be carried out for continuing the progress. The initiatives for preserving the biodiversity were taken up in partnership with the “Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux” (LPO). The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), with which Accor collaborates in the program TOI (Tour Operator Initiative), was associated in this work. In the practical guide that explains how to implement each action of the Charter, experts from the UNEP explain the environmental stakes and justify the pertinence of the selected environmental actions. The topic on the biodiversity is meanwhile introduced by Michael Rands, Director & Chief Executive of BirdLife International, of which the LPO has a membership.
