HQE |
Haute Qualité Environnementale (High Environmental Quality)
is a French approach aimed at limiting buildings environmental impact, while ensuring
that building interiors meet the
requirements for healthy, comfortable living. There is yet no existing framework adapted to hospitality business.
Novotel Paris Gare de Montparnasse has been the first pilot hotel in France to be built according to HQE requirements.
The design of the building was based on an enhanced insulation, several energy recovery systems and a dynamic light regulation.
Accor was one of the founding members of the “Sustainable construction Iniative” research group on sustainable construction. Accor
worked alongside other compagnies (ADP, BNP Paribas, Bouygues Construction, GDF, Lafarge,
Pierre et Vacances, PRP, Conforama, Schneider Electric) and the Utopies consultancy.

Integration study |
Accor must pursue its fundamental thinking
about the Group’s impact on the territories where it decides to
develop. Operating accommodation organisations
for both tourist and business customers is not a neutral activity as
far as the environment
is concerned.
This thinking has to transcend mere consideration
for the beauty of the landscape and the aesthetic preservation of natural
sites to include an overall, exhaustive analysis of the possible environmental
pollution and impact generated by hotel activity in areas such as waste
production, the use of local natural and small-scale resources, energy
consumption and social repercussions.
In 2003, an environmental impact assessment
was carried out on the Sofitel Taba Heights in Egypt. This complete
study on the preservation of marine life alongside the hotel was carried
out in collaboration with the EEAA (Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency)
and the Red Sea Protectorate, the local agency for national park preservation.
Thanks to the project, a site has been identified
without any coral reefs where a jetty can be built, and specific actions
have been undertaken to protect marine life surrounding the hotel.
The Accor Group defined
the general principles for a study of hotel
locations in sensitive areas with the aim
of very concretely testing and refining these principles
within he scope of developing new projects.
